Thank you for your interest in the Hong Kong Migrants Health and Settlement Survey 2024. This survey aims to gather information about the settlement and mental health status of Hong Kong migrants in the UK, a migrant group that has been insufficiently studied thus far.
- Details of the study and the investigator
This online survey is phase one of the study titled “Social Inequalities in Mental Health: A Mixed Method Exploratory Study on the Mental Health Status and Support among British National (Overseas) Migrants in the United Kingdom”. The principal investigator of the study, Mr. Alvin Hui, is a PhD researcher at the School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol. He is supervised by Dr. Catherine Dodds and Professor David Gordon. Dr. Ricci Yue, Lecturer from the Institute for Sustainable Resources, University College London (UCL), is the Co-investigator of this online survey.
Your participation in this study is crucial. Your response can provide valuable evidence to researchers, helping us understand the settlement experience, and the associated social factors that affect your mental health. Your voice can also influence positive change and mental health support that is specific to BN(O) migrants. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to enter a lucky draw with a chance to win a £25 gift voucher.
This survey will take about approximately 15-20 minutes to complete, and will consist of questions regarding your migration background and settlement, health status, loneliness and social support, living standards, integration adjustment to stress, and demography. This research has been approved by the School for Policy Studies Research Ethics Committee, University of Bristol (Ref: 17035).
- Participation and Withdrawal
Participation in the study is entirely voluntary, and completely anonymous. You will not be asked to provide your name or any other identifiable information in your responses.
- Optional participation in the next phase of the research
After completing the survey, there is an option at the end of the questionnaire for you to provide your contact information if you are interested in participating in the next phase of the study, which involves an online or in-person interview which is approximately an hour long.
- Processing of Survey Data
No personally identifiable information is being collected in the survey. In other words, your identity will not be identifiable from your responses. Your data will be handled and stored in accordance with The Data Protection Act 2018. The anonymised dataset and all research-related documents will be stored securely on the University’s OneDrive. Only authorised researchers of the study will have access to the dataset. The dataset will be destroyed ten years after the project is completed.
The anonymised data will be utilised solely for research purposes by academics. It will be made accessible to other researchers exclusively for research-related activities upon request, contingent upon approval by the principal investigator.
All contact information that you provide to us will be stored on a separate password-protected spreadsheet on a secured university computer. They will be linked with your survey responses. No one will have access to the information except authorised researchers. Your contact details will be securely destroyed after all contacts have been made.
- Potential harm of the survey
We don’t expect there to be any disadvantages or risks to taking part. However, please be aware that some survey questions may cause distress or discomfort. We encourage you to answer as many questions as you can; nevertheless, you can also choose to withdraw from the study at any time by simply exiting the survey.
